The book Sandwich Panel Construction by Rolf Koschade was out of print for quite some time. The constantly high demand has encouraged the Institute for Sandwich Technology together with the author to republish a limited number of books in a reduced format. The now available book offers the same, all-embracing insight into the wide field of sandwich technology. This includes a chapter introducing the reader to the mechanics of sandwich construction written by Prof. Berner. The reduced format of 201 x 214 mm even allows a considerably cheaper price when compared to the first edition.

The Practical guide to determine relevant values for the CE marking of load bearing sandwich panels based on EN 14509 and EPAQ regulations by Klaus Berner et al. was produced in conjunction with the very successful workshop “Getting a CE-label for sandwich panels” and contains very useful information on the implementation of the new sandwich standard. The book is setup so that each page consists of two columns, one column giving the regulatory background and one column giving a calculation example. This ensures practical guidance to all problems occurring when producing a CE label for a sandwich panel.

Building with sandwich panels without substructure changes their load-bearing behaviour. Traditionally, sandwich panels are secondary structural members of a building. They are mounted on a load-bearing substructure consisting of steel, reinforced concrete or wood. Statically, they act as simply supported beams. However, when the conventional bracing members are missing, the panels serve as planar load-bearing elements. In this application both axial and in-plane forces have to be carried by the panels themselves. Knowledge about this load-bearing behaviour opens new kinds of applications. On the one hand smaller buildings without substructure are possible which means a considerable advantage regarding reduction of costs and mounting time. On the other hand in-plane shear resistance of sandwich panels can be used to stabilise larger buildings by restraining the lateral displacement of the substructure and for global stabilization of the complete building against horizontal loads.
