InnoProm - cooperative graduation 1/2/2019 - Optimierte modulare Bauweise von Windenwegieanlagen
Die geplante Promotionsarbeit zielt darauf ab, ein deutlich verbessertes Fertigteilkonzept für Hybridtürme zu entwickeln. Dabei sollen zunächst diverse Turmgeometrien im Grund- und Aufriss erstellt und bewertet werden. Das Resultat ist zunächst eine Rangliste diverser Turmgeometrien "aus einem Guss".

Katrin Kilian has left the institute to finish her scientific thesis at Technische Universität Darmstadt. M.Sc. Leonhardt Lieyanto joins the institute as new scientific assistant and now strengthens our team.

Reorganisation of the iS-mainz13/1/2014 - The Institute for Sandwich Technology - Mainz is reorganised and opens its focus towards a wider range of constructional civil engineering. The institute still carries out basic research and applied research in the area of sandwich technology and futhermore strategically combines the expertise in lightweight steel, structural dynamics and timber materials for reseach and design development in civil engineering.
The new name of the institute now is Institute of Innovative Structures.

Change of personell at iS-mainz 01/02/2011 - Dipl.-Ing. (FH) Marc Rippel left the institute to become technical developer at a big German chemistry company, which provides the sandwich industriy with synthetics.
At the end of last year M.Sc. Dipl.-Ing. (FH) Christian Berg changed as superviser for building materials to Finanzministerium Rheinland-Pfalz.
Dipl.-Ing. Katrin Kilian joins the institute as new scientific assistant and doctorand and now strengthens our team. Main focus of her work is the research assignment SandFast.

SandFast - Development and optimization of practical fastenings of sandwich panels by design special solutions01/07/2010 - This research project deals with the optimization of practical fastenings of sandwich panels. Firstly, the economic proof of interaction for tensile and shear forces is to be determined for direct fastenings.  The aim of this research project is the optimization of joint geometry using FEM-simulation to increase the load-bearing capacity of indirect (hidden) fixings. Within statically indetermined multi-span systems sandwich panels are constrained due to temperature differences. By developing practical flexible fastenings, the load-bearing capacity of the sandwich panels is to be increased.
The project was funded by BMBF in a term of 2.5 years. The official start of the research project has been 01 July 2010.

SwichCore II - Research and improval of the Fire-resistance of the core materials of sandwich-panels01/07/2009 - The research project SwichCore II deals with research and improval of the fire-resistance of the core materials for sandwich-panels. Within the previous research project SwichCore new materials were developed. Two of those materials will be optimised in SC II.
The testing within this project is about the mechanical properties as well as the fire behavior, especially fire resistance. Another main focus is the design of joints, which have a big influence on the fire-resistance of panels.
The project is financed by the Bundesministerium für Bildung und Forschung (BMBF) and has a running time of 2,5 years (July 1st. 2009 to December 31st. 2011).

iS-engineering GmbH takes over functions of iS-consult GmbH 08/06/2009 - The iS-consult GmbH was founded out of the Institut für Sandwichtechnik in january 2007 to serve as a contact centre for the industry concerning product development and engineering services.
As a result of reorganisation at the institute iS-consult was liquidated in the middle of 2010.
Since then all functions of iS-consult GmbH are provided by iS-engineering GmbH, which also develops and distributes the design software SandStat.

04/03/2009 - iS-mainz on the move
The Institute for Sandwich Technology moves to its new rooms at the Hochschule Mainz - University of Applied Sciences. We are happy to be back at the Hochschule Mainz premises close to our testing laboartories.

05/01/2009 - Change of personnel at iS-mainz
Since Septemer 1st, 2008 iS-mainz is jointly managed by Prof. Dr.-Ing. Klaus Berner and Prof. Dr.-Ing. Bernd Naujoks. The latter also heads the material testing authority at Hochschule Mainz.

End of last year Ms M.Eng. Dipl.-Ing. (FH) Aneta Kurpiela changed as Ph. D. student to Technical University Darmstadt.

Dr. Lars Pfeiffer left iS-mainz to become new head of the technical department of a well-known sandwich panel producer.

Dipl.-Ing. (FH) Marc Rippel and M.Sc. Dipl.-Ing. (FH) Christian Berg are the new scientific assistants at the institute. Mr. Lorenz Otte joined the team at the laboratories.

PrePreg - Standardisation of a prepreg recycling process: determination and evaluation of mechanical properties of a new construction product providing the base for a technical approval
When manufacturing the rotors of large windmill plants a remaining quantity of epoxy resin mats with woven glass-fiber reinforcement is accumulated. These so-called prepregs are very expensive to dispose of. Therefore, this recycling material shall be used as a new construction product for claddings at balconies and stairs. This was the first research project funded under the ProfUnd program. After 27 months processing time it was completed successfully.

DiFuSe - Research and Development of tight joints for sandwich panels used in steel light-weight constructions
It is the primary object of the research project to investigate the tightness of joints in constructions made of sandwich elements. Hence, guidelines for the design of new joints shall be derived. For this purpose it is essential to know in detail the basic parameters for the conveyance of air, water and heat energy through the joints. The project is financed by the “Bundesministerium für Bildung und Forschung (BMBF)“. The period March 1st, 2007 until August 31st, 2009 is scheduled as processing time.

SandFlat - Research and development into flat roof sandwich elements
A number of aspects and technical problems could be solved through this research. To some extent the in SandFlat achieved results and technical solutions are already applied by the sandwich producers. A summary of the achieved results was published in the Germany’s professional journal „Der Stahlbau“.

EASIE –Ensuring Advancement in Sandwich construction through Innovation and Exploitation
The European research project is situated in the Commissions 7th Framework Programme and had its official starting date at October 1st, 2008. The project gets 19 partners from 10 nations to work together on current subjects in sandwich technology. The EASIE research was initiated by ECCS TWG 7.9 and is coordinated at iS-mainz. The EU grant agreement was signed in early December 2008. More detailed information about the project can be found at

SandSet - Research into Sandwich elements as self-supporting structural members
The research project addresses the applicability of sandwich panels as self-supporting structural members without substructure. The studies comprise the development of fastenings to ensure the transition of loads into the sandwich structure. This includes the fastenings of sandwich panels among each other as well as the fastening of wall and roof panels. A design method shall be derived. By saving the substructure both production costs and assembly time are reduced. New ways of application of sandwich panels will be established. The project is funded by the BMBF. Scheduled processing time is 3 years. The project started July 1st, 2008.

The European Standard on Sandwich Panels EN 14509 has been published at the Official Journal of the European Community at last.


07/03/2008 - This year the instute has been invited to participate in the largest seminar on sandwich constructions in Latin America.
The isotecnicamex II will take place on the 07th of April 2008 in Mexico City, Mexico. Dr. Pfeiffer will givge apresentation on current developments and research on sandwich technology. 07/12/2007 – Citation of EN 14509 by EU is postponed again which causes multi million euro damage.
Surprisingly the European Commission has decided against citation of the European Standard on Sandwich Panels EN 14509. This startling twist is recognized by the European and pan-European sandwich industry with great incomprehension. The consequences resulting are far reaching and generate additional multi million Euro costs for the industry.
At first the citation which was initially planned for summer 2007 was postponed because of the unassertive preparation of the standard by EU Services. EU and CEN blamed each other for not providing necessary information and causing the delay. EU Services did point out some mistakes in EN 14509. These where however mainly connected to annex ZA “Clauses of this European Standard addressing the provisions of the EU Construction Products Directive”. CEN reacted by providing a Corrigendum addressing the mistakes and insisted that there is no reason not to cite the standard in the official journal (quote: „In short, with this corrigendum, we think we have responded to all the EC's identified deficiencies, removed them and therefore, we see no reason at all why citation would not be possible.“).
The reaction of the European Commission was surprising. Citation was now rejected arguing that the reaction to fire test as proposed in EN 14509 is inacceptable as it is not giving safe results. This argument had been on the table some time ago, but was anticipated to be discussed and solved earlier.
The European sandwich panel producers have expressed their strong protest against this decision. In a joined letter prepared by EPPF, EPAQ and Panama International, which was also signed by 20 European sandwich producers, the industry asks the European Commission, DG Enterprise in person of Mr. Klein not to postpone citation of the sandwich standard.
Unfortunately the EU did not publish EN 14509 together with a bundle of other standards on 04.12.2007. It seems that this decision was greatly influenced by the mineral wool industry lobby. Through a series of questionable argumentation the mineral wool industry lobby tries to convince the Commission that the test results obtained in the SBI testing of sandwich elements leads to wrong results which over estimate the performance of sandwich panels in fire. The fact that mineral wool elements are the only sandwich panels that can be classified as A2 seems not to be enough competitive advantage to the lobby.
Most European sandwich panel producers and by the way also many producers from beyond Europe have already started ITT testing to obtain a CE label. The current development however suggests that the standard will not be published before summer 2008. It is necessary to still acquire and maintain national approvals. The damage caused is difficult to estimate. Depending on the costumer consortium of the producer it can easily rise to several hundreds of thousands of Euros per producer.
Costumers of the Institut für Sandwichtechnik under these circumstances benefit from the fact that its testing authorities are accepted by the DIBt in Berlin. These is the possibility to use the acquired test reports and expertises for national German approvals and once the standard is cited also for CE labelling.


25/08/2007 – Cooperation Agreement with LHH consulting Oy Ab Ltd in Finland
The Institut für Sandwichtechnik has concentrated on consultancy work for sandwich panel producers nationally and internationally for many years. In order to intensify the contacts to Scandinavian and Northern Europe producers, a cooperation agreement with LHH consulting Oy AB Ltd. from Finland has been signed. Dr. Lars Pfeiffer and Dr. Lars Heselius have exchanged contracts on 25 July 2007 in Mainz. Dr. Heselius has worked for a major sandwich producer for many years and is well qualified, experienced and well known to the sandwich industry. The benefit for our costumers will be a higher level of attendance and support combined with the familiar proceedings and benefits of a consultancy by the institute.


01/01/2007 – Reorganisation of the Institute for Sandwich Technology
It has been a pleasure to see the Institute for Sandwich Technology growing steadily and constantly since its official opening in December 2003.
Besides basic, public funded, fundamental research, industry driven product and technology research and development has always been the major task of our institute. In order to fulfil this task even more effective and to form a real contact centre for anyone related to the sandwich philosophy the Institute for Sandwich Technology hived off from university as iS-consult GmbH. At the same time the institute moved to a new office where increasing customer demands can be satisfied at a high standard. This is particularly important on the background of fundamental changes pending in the area of sandwich technology. In the upcoming year the first sandwich elements carrying a CE label according to EN 14509 will available on the European market. Notional agreements will phase-out after a period of coexistence and a new European quality label will set new standards on element quality.
The new iS-consult intends to be a competent and reliable companion and supporter in managing these upcoming changes.


01/01/2007 – Recent Publications
Besides several smaller articles, a just republished book shall be mentioned here:

  • The book Sandwich Panel Construction by Rolf Koschade was out of print for quite some time. The constantly high demand has encouraged the Institute for Sandwich Technology together with the author to republish a limited number of books in a reduced format. The now available book offers the same, all-embracing insight into the wide field of sandwich technology. This includes a chapter introducing the reader to the mechanics of sandwich construction written by Prof. Berner. The reduced format of 201 x 214 mm even allows a considerably cheaper price when compared to the first edition. Purchase price 75 € (388 pages with 506 illustrations, plus VAT, postage and packaging).

05/07/2006 - Time to CE Label your panel
The 2nd formal vote on prEN 14509 has ended positive. A majority of 82% has voted in favour of a harmonized European standard. The introduction of the new European sandwich standard will lead to numerous changes for the producers of sandwich panels. From September on, the producers will take many additional responsibilities and there will be a widely enlarged flexibility, in particular concerning the introduction of new products.


20/12/2005 – Recent Publications
Despite smaller publications in journals, the iS-mainz has only recently issued two new books:

  • The Practical guide to determine relevant values for the CE marking of load bearing sandwich panels based on EN 14509 and EPAQ regulations was produced in conjunction with the very successful workshop “Getting a CE-label for sandwich panels” and contains very useful information on the implementation of the new sandwich standard. The book is setup so that each page consists of two columns, one column giving the regulatory background and one column giving a calculation example. This ensures practical guidance to all problems occurring when producing a CE label for a sandwich panel. The selling price for the book is 66 € (181 pages with 88 illustrations; including VAT; plus postage and packaging)

  • The Durability Assessment of Sandwich Panel Construction book summarizes the research on the long term structural performance of sandwich panels. The book proposes a detailed durability evaluating testing scenario including all aspects of natural excitation related degradation of structural parameters. This includes the influence of core degradation on the wrinkling strength. Hundreds of individual test results are made available. The selling price for the book is 70 € (229 pages with 167 illustrations; including VAT; plus postage and packaging)

01/12/2005 – New research project on PrePreg recycling
The latest development is based on a large quantity of material available from the producers of wind energy plants. Such wind mills are often made from high quality fibre reinforced plastics, namely Prepreg, a woven fibre mat soaked with epoxy resin. If not used in a recycling process, the Prepreg remains are cost-intensive waste that needs disposal and is obliged to production of supporting documents.
It is the aim of this project to introduce this high quality recycling material to an advanced application which exploits particularly the mechanical potential of the product. The Project is supported by the German Ministry for economy affairs and employment. Starting date fort he project was the 1st of December 2005 and the project is scheduled to run for two years.


04/08/2005 - Workshop: Getting a CE-Label for Sandwich Panels
The introduction of the new European sandwich standard EN 14509 will lead to numerous changes for the producers of sandwich panels. On the one hand, the producers will take many additional responsibilities, while, on the other hand, there will be a widely enlarged flexibility, in particular concerning the introduction of new products. Because of this, the iS-mainz, together with the European Quality Assurance Association for Panels and Profiles (EPAQ), will hold an intensive workshop on 9th and 10th November 2005 in Mainz, Germany.


08/06/2005 - iS-mainz joins SAND.CORe user group in coordination action on sandwich application in transportation sector.
The project aims to foster the application of innovative sandwich structures in the European transport sector. This will be done by benchmarking, harmonising and complementing previous research work and evaluating state-of-the-art knowledge and experiences. Research results will thus be made easily available to the European research community and industry.
The overall objective of the project is to boost the applications of sandwich structures in several transport sectors. As a consequence of non-coordinated research and lacking exchange of information, the knowledge about sandwich panels is widespread over the industry and other parties (research, classification societies, suppliers, shipyards…). Therefore, there is the need to co-ordinate research, to conduct knowledge transfer and foster the application of various types of sandwich structures.
By joining the project iS-mainz hopes to establish a connection between the building industry and other fields of sandwich application so that different sectors can benefit from each other. Though the user group fee could be waved, expenses for the project are restricted to internal funding within the institute and thus limited.

08/06/2005 - Openings in sandwich panels generally require additional girders as support. Besides the common solutions, this report introduces a supporting frame which can reinforce openings in sandwich structures. The use of lengthwise aluminium profiles that are thermally separated is discussed and initial test series are presented. First results indicate that these additional structures are able to achieve the same load bearing capacities as not weakened panels.

23/03/2005 - This year the iS-mainz has been invited to participate in the largest seminar on sandwich constructions in South America.
The isotecnicaseis will take place on the 31st of May 2005 in Montevideo, Uruguay. The following day will offer the possibility to liaise with representatives from the South American sandwich industry. The complete seminar programme can be seen here.


20/03/2005 - The ASPAN research project has come to an end and the final research report is now available. It can be purchased from the project leader (Advanced Research Partnership) by sending a short e-mail.

08/03/2005 – Minister of education Zöllner visits the Institute for Sandwich Technology. After presenting the new loan program “Wissen schaf(f)t Zukunft” a wordplay of the words science, create and future, Prof. Berner introduced the Minister to the sandwich technology. The iS-mainz is expecting reasonable funding from the program which has a total budget of 25 Mio. Euros.


15/02/2005 – On January the 28th 2005 the final result of the Formal Vote concerning the sandwich standard prEN 14509 was published on the CEN livelink server. The result of the vote is negative. In total 17 member countries have voted in favour of the standard, 5 against it. Taking the weight of the different votes into account the result is 65,27% of approval. For a positive result a majority of more than 71% is required. It is expected that the entry into force of prEN 14509 will be delayed by 6 to 12 months. The document is now again subject to changes.


20/12/2004 – The iS-mainz would like to wish all its partners a very merry Christmas and a happy and prosperous new year. We hope that the development of the institute will proceed as positive as it has started in its first year of existence. As a small Christmas present iS-mainz provides a small Excel based program helping to evaluate shear tests on sandwich panels. The Excel file and a manual can be downloaded.


16/12/2004 - As the first panel producer Trimo d.d from Slovenia has signed a cooperation agreement with iS-mainz. Particularly in a highly competitive market such as the sandwich wall finishes and roof application market, innovation driven companies have a higher chance of gaining marketing share and keeping their market position. The cooperation between the two partners serves to thrives the innovativeness of Trimo d.d. through regular contact and projects with iS-mainz.


01/10/2004 - The German ministry for education and research has commissioned the iS-mainz with conducting the SwichCore research project. It is the aim of the project to develop new, fire enhanced core materials for sandwich panel. Further information is available here.


08/06/2004 - About 150 experts from industry and research visited the
official opening ceremony of iS-mainz. Many visitors expressed their interest in the exhibited subjects. The event also served as a plenum for technical and social exchange. Some cooperation agreements have already been made.

28/05/2004 - The Institute for Sandwich Technology presents itself
Exhibition of current projects
In a comprehensive exhibition the Institute for Sandwich Technology – Mainz will present its currently investigated projects. The event will take place in the Aula (assembly room) of Hochschule-Mainz.
At the same time the 38th general assembly of Panama International, a worldwide union of panel producers, will be held in Hyatt Mainz. All participants are invited to visit the exhibition.

18/02/2004 - Development of an innovative method for
Localization of acoustic impulses
Since November 2003 iS-mainz is running a project trying to adapt and simplify a method which allows for localizing the place of origin for point shaped sound sources. The method adapts TDOA (time difference of arrival) analysis tools. A mathematical model is currently developed.


17/02/2004 - Ingenieurvermessung Zürich….
Utilizing 3D-scanning to investigate pre wrinkling deformation in sandwich panels
With the help of a mobile 3D-scansystem deformation in sandwich structures are detected. Panel faces are investigated under different load cases. Scans are quick to allow for numerous scans at loading intervals. Both, a qualitative and quantitative statement on pre-wrinkling panel behaviour can be made. The results help finding a mathematical model allowing determining the wrinkling strengths. A model for data analysis is discussed in the report.
